So you’ve decided you want to pop the question, and you’ve found the most perfect engagement ring, so now all you have to do is plan the all-important proposal for your future spouse.
If you’re struggling to decide how to pop the question, then why not take your other half on a romantic weekend away and explore a new place together? Discovering something a new and spending quality time together would be the ideal build up to a proposal!
To help you find that perfect destination, we’ve teamed up with travel experts Best Western to bring you the top 4 most romantic UK proposal destinations for 2024.
Lake District
Filled with famous mountains and breathtaking waterways, the Lake District is England’s largest National Park, and is a great choice for outdoorsy couples. You could hike during the day, enjoying the scenery and experiencing the area’s nature and wildlife, before stopping off for a pub lunch and a hot drink by the fire.
Couples that love shopping could stumble across some of the Lake District’s many market towns, with traditional inns, independent cafes and quirky gift shops to buy those all-important souvenirs and post cards for loved ones.
If you like to try new things, then why not take the plunge and experience one of the Lake District’s most popular activities, wild water swimming. Fuelled by endorphins and excitement, wild water swimming is one of the best ways to discover the region’s picturesque lakes and rivers in a way you might not of initially thought of. Maybe you could use the moment and pop the question on the bank of lake Windermere after your swim!
You’ll be doing lots of exploration in the Lake District, so we recommend you stay in a luxurious spa hotel to make sure you get a good balance of rest and relaxation too. Best Western’s Ambleside Salutation Hotel & Spa hotel would be absolutely perfect for this!
Edinburgh
Set your sights on Scotland’s beautiful capital city of Edinburgh. Merging medieval architecture, hilly landscapes and picturesque gardens, there really is something for every couple to enjoy in Edinburgh.
Couples that enjoy history will absolutely love a visit to the breathtaking Edinburgh Castle, which stands over the city in all its medieval glory. Those who visit the castle will see Scotland’s crown jewels and the Stone of Destiny, which is used in the coronation of Scottish rulers.
With multiple theatres and galleries on your doorstep, it’s no surprise that Edinburgh is home to the world’s biggest arts festival – Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Taking place every year in August, Fringe is one of the greatest celebrations of arts and culture.
A visit to the National Museum of Scotland is an absolute must visit (and it’s free) with galleries focussing on art, science fashion and technology, alongside a wide mix of Victorian and modern architecture. There are 10,000 objects to see and learn about from a T-Rex skeleton to a sample of penicillin inscribed by Alexander Fleming himself.
Round off your romantic days in Edinburgh with a beautiful meal in one of the city’s many varied restaurants, and chill out with a drink in one of the local pubs – perhaps this is the ideal place to pop the question!
We recommend Best Weston’s Ten Hill Place Hotel and its convenient and quiet Georgian Square location.
London
Crammed with towns full of unique personality, London is full of culture, vibrance and delicious cuisines to enjoy. Fancy a tour of Westminster one day and a visit to Borough Market the next? London has it! Would you like a meal at the Ritz followed by an edgy night out in Camden? You can do that in London too. With its limitless possibilities and magical feel, London is the perfect place for a romantic and exciting breakaway.
Couples that enjoy the performing arts would love to see a show at London’s famous West End. Whether you prefer traditional musicals like Fiddler on the Roof or modern plays like Harry Potter and the Cursed Child there is something for every taste. Plus, the comedy scene in London is low-cost yet impressive, and it will make you belly laugh all night.
London can be as expensive as you make it too, with numerous free museum’s to spend hours in. Learn about the history of London at the Museum of London, dinosaurs at the Natural History Museum and even see Vincent van Gogh’s Sunflowers at the National Gallery – all free of charge. Just make sure you wear comfortable shoes with all the walking you’ll be doing!
Last but not least, enjoy London from above and take in the views from The London Eye and The Shard which are both amazing places for a romantic proposal. Make it even more special with a glass of champagne or a lovely meal before popping the question.
We recommend you find comfort in England’s capital at Best Western’s Premier Collection, Mornington London Kensington hotel, right by Earls Court tube station.
Chester
As one of Britain’s greatest heritage sites, Chester is another great destination for history loving couples to explore. Chester has a magnificent medieval cathedral, as well as ruins of the largest Roman amphitheatre in Britain.
Chester is also home to the most complete City Walls in Britain, dating from the Roman occupation at least 2,000 years ago built to protect the city. Today, you can enjoy the 2-mile walk around the wall whilst admiring the city’s beautiful heritage. If you still haven’t had enough Roman history, you can also visit the Roman Amphitheatre where 7,000 residents once watched circuses, had festivals and enjoyed gladiator fights too!
Some retail therapy might be right up your street as well, with the unique 700 year old Rows multi-level shopping galleries. It is unknown why the Rows were built in such an unusual way, but they form an interesting array of independent boutiques, not forgetting our favourite high-street shops too.
Animal lovers would find a visit to Chester extremely fun too. Home to over 35,000 animals across 124 acres of zoological gardens, Chester Zoo is the most visited zoo in the UK and is a conservation charity committed to preventing extinction. Visit the critically endangered orangutans from the rainforests of south east Asia, and see the bouncing ring-railed lemurs of Madagascar, along with thousands of other exotic species. It’s a full day out!
After all of this exploring you’ll be needing a good rest, so why not stay as close as possible to the train station at a landmark Chester hotel like Best Western’s Premier Collection hotel; The Queen at Chester. The Queen at Chester Hotel has had a roll call of famous guests in the past, and each floor of the hotel is dedicated to a country, with every suite named after a king of that nation.
